Issue

The emergence of Pegasus spyware has shown a new Zero click attack which does not make use of click messages or links for initiating phishing attacks.

Background

Digital fraud and malware attacks have started increasing day by day. Large number of people are falling prey to malicious agenda driven by few sections.

Details

  • The Pegasus is a spyware that is used to track and steal data from a target phone. Unlike previous attacks this software does not need clicking to initiate.

  • This feature has made it almost impossible to detect and potent. Once the Pegasus software is loaded into the phone, handler will have more control than the owner.

  • It gets access to root level directory and can get contacts, messages, app data, browsing history and emails. These data can be transmitted to the attackers.

  • There is no use of precautionary steps in these attacks. The system receives data before analyzing its authenticity. This makes the malware undetectable for user.

  • The malware has been successful in breaching vulnerability in WhatsApp by making calls to the target and getting installed without even a click.

Preventing the attack

  • Zero click attacks are difficult to identify or prevent. The challenge is even more considering the encrypted data transmitted without consuming too much power.

  • All the apps and operating system have to be updated so that they have limited vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

  • Apps and softwares have to be downloaded from trusted sources such as Play store or IOS store. Downloading from unknown sources is dangerous.
