Vietnam Covid-19 variantDate: 05 June 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous
A new variant of Covid-19 virus has been recorded in Vietnam. This has led to increase in new caseload in the country.
Vietnam had been successful in tackling infection spread in the country. The new variant may alter the future course.
The new mutant variant discovered in Vietnam is a combination of the varieties found in India and UK.
Mutation in virus happens regularly. While some mutations are not significant, others can make virus more contagious.
Features of new variant
The new strain has been able to replicate more easily and spread faster through air. It is more transmissible than previous ones.
The concentration of the virus in throat fluid is said to increase more rapidly. It can spread strongly to surrounding environment.
Risk from new strain
The strain identified in India, known as Delta is more transmissible than the one isolated in the UK.
Vaccines such as Pfizer and AstraZeneca are effective against the Delta strain after two doses but efficacy after single dose is reduced.
There is no evidence that the new variant is more deadly or serious than the previous ones. Vulnerable and unvaccinated population have to be protected.
