Traffic management system on Mumbai-Pune highway

Date: 11 September 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

Issue

Intelligent (or Highways) Traffic Management System (I/HTMS) will be installed on Mumbai-Pune express highway.

Background

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had floated a tender to select an agency to implement the system in 2019.

Details

The contract will soon be awarded to the lowest bidder. Once the system is ready and tested in 9-10 months, it will be live.

Intelligent Traffic Management System

  • The Intelligent Traffic Management System will include high-tech cameras, sensors and other traffic violation detection systems.

  • It will be useful in regulation of traffic, deterring high-speed and dangerous driving, incident and accident mitigation.

  • The system will keep updating authorities on their Central Command Centre setup. This will help them keep a check on traffic violators.

Need for ITMS

  • ITMS is one of the busiest transport corridors. About 60,000 vehicles pass daily. The numbers are increasing day by day. This has resulted in accidents, fatalities and traffic jams on the expressway.

  • Major causes of accidents include speeding, overloaded vehicles, unauthorised halts and not following traffic rules.

  • ITMS will help them curb traffic violations and improve discipline. They will also help in avoiding accident-like situations.

Traffic violations that will be highlighted

Over speeding, illegal stoppages on the highways, wrong side driving, wrong entry (no entry), lane discipline violation, not wearing a seat belt, using a mobile phone while driving,  driving without tail light and reflector, pedestrian crossing violation, having a fancy number plate, overloaded vehicle, two-wheeler plying in restricted area.

Technology used

The system will be making use of Artificial Intelligence. The vehicular traffic data will be collected and transferred to central command for analysis to identify rule violations.

Components of system

  • Average Speed Detection Systems

  • Lane Discipline Violation Detection System

  • Weigh-in Motion machines for goods vehicles

  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

  • Toll booths for penalty collection.

  • CCTV cameras for general surveillance and wrong-way entry detection

  • Weather monitoring system

  • Variable Messaging Sign (VMS)

  • High-tech mobile surveillance vans equipped with cameras, speed guns and e-challan machines
