Rise in dengue cases

Delhi is witnessing a rise in dengue cases, resulting in further pressure on health care system in the Union Territory.

 

Background

Dengue is a viral disease that affects all age groups, especially the children. Exposure to mosquitoes is the main reason behind the infection.

 

Details

  • The main duration of dengue cases is between September and October. The increased rainfall duration and temperature has aggravated the situation.

  • The main cause of illness and mortality in dengue patients is dehydration and shock. This has been seen in majority of patients.

  • Dengue fever is transmitted from one person to another by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus.

  • The mosquito gets infected when it bites a person with dengue virus in their blood. Spreading from people to people directly does not take place.

 

Warning signs in patients

  • Severe pain in the abdomen

  • Bleeding from mouth/nose/gums,

  • Restlessness

  • Frequent vomiting

  • Lethargy

  • Poor oral intake

 

Precautions

  • Children should be fully clothed to prevent mosquito bites.

  • In case of minor symptoms, they should be well fed and liquids like ORS, coconut water has to be given.

  • In case the fever lasts more than three days, blood test has to be conducted to check for infection.

  • There has to be efforts to keep the mosquito population down to prevent the infection from spreading.

  • Mosquito breeding areas such as old plastic containers, tin cans, tires, bird birth, flower pots etc have to be cleared regularly.
