Ukraine has claimed to have damaged the Russian Black Sea Fleet Flagship ‘Moskva’ using a Neptune anti-ship cruise missile.

Russia and Ukraine have indulged in intense battle on all fronts including Navy. Russia claims that onboard ammunition fire caused the blasts.

  • The design of Neptune missile is based on a Russian Kh-35 cruise missile which goes by the NATO name of AS-20 Kayak.

  • Missile Neptune is anti-ship cruise missile which is capable of destruction of naval vessels in a range of 300 km.

  • It was inducted into Ukrainian army in March 2021 after being in development phase for the last six years.

  • The development was hasty as Ukraine feared Russian military attack on the coastal areas of Ukraine since invasion of Crimea.

Moskva ship

  • Named after the city of Moscow, Moskva is a guided missile cruiser of the Russian Navy. It has a displacement of 12,490 tons.

  • Being a flagship of Russian Navy’s Black Sea fleet, it carries a crew of around 500 personnel. Earlier it was known as Slava.

  • It was reinducted in 2000 as Moskva with refurbished weapon systems and electronics.

Attack modus operandi

  • Ukraine forces may have used TB-2 drones as decoys towards saturation of the cruiser’s Air Defence systems.

  • This allowed the cruise missile to slip through the air defence system of the ship. The damage is said to be very high.

Damages caused

Reports claimed that the ship was hit on the side and is close to sinking. Russia has not acknowledged the damage status.
