It is a non-pressurized aircraft that has a turboprop engine. It is capable of operating at day and night.
It can take off and land from small and semi-prepared runways. It was constructed mainly for purpose of surveillance, air-taxi, coast guard duties etc.
The Dornier 228 aircrafts will be modified and fitted with digital cockpit to ensure accurate readings and precise communication.
The lease agreement between HAL and Alliance Air was signed in 2021 for supplying two civil Dornier 228. The first aircraft was received this month.
Connectivity to northeast
The UDAN scheme of Ministry of Civil aviation has been prioritized for the northeast to boost connectivity with rest of the country.
Under the scheme, new airports are being constructed and old existing airports are being upgraded.
The flight is initially scheduled to operate in Dibrugarh-Pasighat sector for twice a week. It will be later extended to Tezu and Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh.
Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) was launched in 2016 to connect small and medium cities through air service.
The objective of the scheme was to take flying to the masses and improve connectivity across tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
