The first all-civilian and non-governmental spaceflight of SpaceX, Inspiration4 will be launched on September 15.

A group of four private citizens will be taken to space for three days on board the Crew Dragon spacecraft, launched from Florida.

  • US billionaire Jared Isaacman has purchased all four seats on the spacecraft. He is the founder of fintech company Shift4 Payments.

  • The money raised from the trip will be used for the Tennessee-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which focuses on children’s catastrophic diseases, particularly leukaemia and other cancers.

  • Haley Arceneaux, a childhood bone cancer survivor along with Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski will join Jared Isaacman on the trip.

  • The mission will involve circling the Earth for three day and later landing in the Atlantic Ocean. They have been training for past few months.

Other aspects

  • Inspiration4 will be orbiting the Earth at 575km, which is higher than the Hubble telescope and also the International Space Station.

  • The space module has been specifically modified for the mission. It will be used for travelling to the ISS and join the floating laboratory.

  • The mission will aim to collect large amounts of health data that will aid in planning future crewed space missions.

  • Few health conditions that will be studied include ECG (electrocardiograph) activity, movement, sleep, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate and rhythm, cabin noise and light intensity.

  • Blood sample of travelers will be collected before and after the journey to assess immune system function due to space travel. The organs will also be monitored through AI devices.
