The President of US Joe Biden has said that advanced military equipments will be provided to Ukraine, including four HIMAR systems.
The US is leaving no stone unturned to stop Russian expansion into interior Ukraine. It is equipping Ukraine with all modern weapons.
The US administration had recently said that they would send Ukraine a small number of high-tech, medium-range rocket systems.
High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is mounted on a truck, and can carry a container with six rockets.
It can launch a medium-range rocket and is also capable of firing a longer-range missile, having a range of about 300 km.
Significance for Ukraine
Ukraine plans to use this weapon to target Russian artillery, as well as hit Russian positions in towns where intense fighting is taking place.
It is important for Russia to capture Luhansk province of the Donbas for gaining strategic upper hand. Ukraine is making all efforts to prevent it.
The US government has been assured by Ukraine that the missile will not be used to strike inside Russian territory.
Development of HIMARS
HIMARS was developed for US army in 1990s. It is a light multiple rocket launcher mounted on a standard Army M1140 truck frame.
The launcher can carry six rockets or one MGM-140 ATACMS missile. The launcher can be transported by C-130 transport aircraft.
Use in US combats
The missile system has been used previously by US army to target Taliban hideouts in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
It has also been used during the fight against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
