A major disruption in services of several internet websites were observed due to a problems in content delivery network (CDN) offered by American cloud Computing services provider Fastly.

Many websites depend on cloud service providers such as Fastly for giving access to their users.

  • Major websites that crashed were Vimeo, PayPal,, Reddit,  Pinterest, Stack Overflow, Quora, GitHub,, Twitch, Spotify, Hulu, HBO Max etc.

  • The error that was observed when users tried to access services was 503 error. It was indicating that browser was unable to connect to server.

Fastly is a company that offers cloud computing services. It specialises in edge computing, CDN and cloud storage services among many.

  • Geographically distributed group of servers that work in tandem to provide fast access to Internet content are known as CDN.

  • The content will be stored close to the telecom service providers networks. CDNs currently hosts majority of internet traffic in the world.

  • They are used majorly by streaming service platforms such as Netflix that tries to store their content nearby the area where it will be consumed.

  • This will ensure that users can access the content faster. The CDNs will also help in protecting against traffic spikes and prevent distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks.

  • This is not the first time CDN problem had caused inconvenience to users. Earlier cloud hosting company Cloudfare had faced similar problems.
