Exposure to common cold virus can help fight Covid-19Date: 21 June 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous
A new research has found that exposure to rhinovirus could provide protection against the Covid-19 infection.
The rhinovirus is the most common reason for common cold. This virus has characteristics similar to SARS CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.
The virus causing common cold has the ability to start the activity of genes that stimulate interferon.
The interferons are molecules that develop during earliest phase of an infection and prevent replication of SARS CoV-2 virus in respiratory tracts.
This initial response generated by interferons is very critical for preventing infection and threat from getting amplified.
The researchers suggest that, patients should be treated with the interferon proteins so that they can act as a defensive mechanism.
The research team artificially infected human tissues with SARS CoV-2 virus. In the initial three days, the viral load doubled every six hours.
The replication process of virus was completely stopped in those tissues that were earlier exposed to rhinovirus.
