Doppler radar tracking weather

Date: 17 July 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

The only Doppler radar in Mumbai has stopped working following heavy and persistent rainfall in the city.

The Doppler radar is involved in weather prediction and forecast across the country. It makes use of radio waves.

  • The Doppler radar had faced problems during the impact of cyclone Tauktae and was restored recently after months of repair.

  • These radars are very important for gauging weather in the country, especially tracking and predicting advancement of monsoon.

  • Other functions include measuring rainfall and its impact in real time. The radar can make observations in an area of 450 to 500 km radius.

  • Satellite technology is being used now to make weather predictions in absence of the radar. They are also equally accurate in predictions.

Working of Doppler radar

  • Radar transmits a beam of radio waves through its antenna. The beam hits objects in atmosphere and scatters. Some of it reaches back to the radar.

  • The observations are made based on the time required for waves to transmit and return back to the radar. It also gives idea of distance of raindrops.

  • The special feature is that the radar can also predict the position of the target and their movement also.

  • The radar captures the position, shape and form of the pulses. This will allow it to predict if raindrops are moving towards or away from their position.

  • C-band, S-band and X-band are varieties of Doppler radars currently being used. They help in prediction especially during events of extreme rainfall such as cyclones.

Doppler radars

  • These radars work in a way similar to Doppler effect. The speed and movement of object towards a target can be predicted using sound waves.

  • These radars send waves for a short period of about 7 seconds. The rest of the time is spent in analyzing the received signals.

Doppler radars in India

On west Coast they are present in places such as Kochi, Mumbai, Goa and Thiruvananthapuram. On the east coast, radars are present in Karaikal, Machilipatanam, Paradip, Vishakhapatnam, Chennai, Gopalpur and Kolkata.
