Statehood movements in West Bengal

BJP MPs from Northern Bengal have demanded two separate states in the Northern part in form of Jangalmahal and North Bengal.

 

Background

West Bengal has already seen many statehood protests. Lately, it turned into a big protest in Darjeeling hills, which led to unrest.

 

Details

  • MP from Alipurduars, John Barla has said that a separate state or union territory should be made for north Bengal as the region lacked development.

  • Similar demands were echoed by Bishnupur MP, Saumitra Khan to create a Jangalmahal state for Adivasis.

  • The state leadership of the party has refused to endorse their views saying the party’s opinion was against division of Bengal.

 

Gorkhaland movement

The Gorkhaland movement was a violent movement that took place in Darjeeling and its surrounding Siliguri area for creating a separate state.

 

Kamtapur movement

  • It is a movement for separate state that includes districts from North Bengal, Assam, Bihar and also Nepal.

  • The main aim was addressing problems faced by the Koch Rajbongshi community such as unemployment, land issues and alienation of their language.

 

Greater Cooch Behar movement

The proposed state included north Bengal districts along with that of Assam. It was against the bifurcation of the erstwhile Cooch Behar kingdom.
