Date: 19 July 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

The government of Andhra Pradesh has notified implementing 10 percent EWS quota in all future government recruitments.

The Union government had created the EWS quota under the 103rd constitutional Amendment Act 2019, which is now being notified by the state.

  • The state government has further simplified the qualification under the EWS quota. Individual not belonging to SC, ST and OBC and having annual income below Rs 8 lakh are eligible.

  • The state had already started implementing the quota in educational institutions and now will be extended to employment also.

Reasons behind implementation

  • The 10 percent EWS quota will cover poor sections of society who belong to the upper caste and do not enjoy reservation.

  • The previous government had divided the quota into 5% for Kapu community and the rest 5% for other sections. This had created confusion and anger from other groups.

  • The income calculation clause and joint income conditions specified by the centre has been removed and made simple.

Individuals whose family owns five or more acres of agricultural land will not be eligible. In addition, residential flat of 1000sq ft or more and 100 sq yards or more plot owners will be ineligible.
