Cabinet abolishes Ombudsman for Direct, Indirect taxes for grievance redressalDate: 07 February 2019 Tags: Miscellaneous
Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved abolition of Institution of Income-Tax Ombudsman and Indirect Tax Ombudsman. It comes in wake of emergence of alternative complaint redressal mechanisms especially online grievance redressal mechanism used by public widely.
- In recent times, these institutions of ombudsman could not prove to be more effective than regular existing parallel channels of grievance redressal.
- Tax payers have started preferring alternate methods of grievance redressal like CPGRAMS (Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System), Aaykar Seva Kendras etc.
Institution of Income-Tax Ombudsman was created in 2003 to deal with grievances of public related to settlement of complaints related to income tax. However, it has failed to achieve its objectives. It was also observed new complaints received by this ombudsman have fallen to single digits. Earlier in 2011 vacant offices of Indirect Tax Ombudsman were also closed.
