Renowned sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik has won People's Choice Prize at the Boston International Sand Art Championship. He won the award for his sand art based on global issue of plastic pollution with a message inscribed "Save our Ocean". Through his sand sculpture he highlighted that human activity is destroying oceans as well as humans are also getting impacted by polluted waterways as they consume food from sea/rivers. Pattnaik was among top 15 sand artists selected from all over world to participate in this championship held in Boston, US. He was sole representative from India as well as Asia. In this even, Belgium won sculptor's choice award and Canada won the jury's choice prize, respectively.
About Sudarshan Pattnaik
He is from Puri district of Odisha. He is known for his sand sculptures on social awareness. He has participated in more than 60 international sand sculpture championships across the world, and won around 27 awards for the country. He is recipient of Padma Shri (2014) and also holds Guinness World Records. In 2017, he had won the jury prize gold medal at the Xth World Sand Sculptures Championship in Moscow, Russia.
