Legendary director Shyam Benegal is making a film on the father of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

 

Details

  • The movie will be an Audio Visual Co-Production Agreement between the Republic of India and the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

  • Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is also known as Sheikh Mujib or Bangabandhu, meaning 'friend of Bengal.'

 

Early life

 He was born in Faridpur district of modern-day Bangladesh in 1920. Rahman studied in Kolkata and Dhaka before entering politics.

 

Political career

  • Rahman actively participated in freedom struggle of India. He later joined Awami league, a group that advocated more autonomy for East Pakistan.

  • He also actively opposed military dictatorship in the undivided Pakistan. After first general elections his party won absolute majority in combined assembly.

 

East-Pakistan Civil war

  • The results of elections were not accepted and a civil war started. Pakistani army captured and killed politicians and intellectuals supporting creation of Bangladesh.

  • India was forced to intervene and with the support of Mukti Bahini, Dhaka was captured and Bangladesh was liberated.

 

Atrocities

The Pakistani army was accused of performing ethnic cleansing of Bengali speakers. Large number of refugees took shelter in India.

 

Post independence

Sheikh Mujib became the first Prime Minister as well as President of independent Bangladesh. He and his family members were assassinated during a military coup.

 

Honour and legacy

Mujib was voted the "Greatest Bengali of All Time '' for his role in creating Bangladesh. He was honoured with the Julio Curie Peace Prize as a symbol of world peace and cooperation.
