The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Samant Kumar Goel as Director of the Research & Analysis Wing (RAW). He will succeed A.K. Dhasmana and will have tenure of two years.
Samant Kumar Goel
He is IPS officer of 1984 batch of Punjab cadre. He is s currently the second seniormost officer in R&AW (additional secretary in Cabinet Secretariat). He was associated with R&AW since 2001. He was involved in planning of 2016 surgical strike (carried out after Uri terror attack) and 2019 Balakot air strike (carried out after Pulwama terror attack). He also had played an important role in checking militancy in Punjab. He is recipient of the Police Medals for Gallantry and Meritorious Service.
Research and Analysis Wing (RAW)
It is foreign intelligence agency of India. It was established in 1968 following intelligence failures of Sino-Indian and Indo-Pakistani wars. It is headquartered in New Delhi. Its motto is The law protects when it is protected. It is under the direct command of Prime Minister and reports on an administrative basis to Cabinet Secretary of India, who then reports to Prime Minister. Its primary function is gathering foreign intelligence, advising Indian policymakers, engaging in counter-terrorism, promoting counter-proliferation and advancing India’s foreign strategic interests.
