Jitender Kumar Awarded Dag Hammarskjold Medal

Indian peacekeeper and police officer Jitender Kumar is among 119 military, police and civilian personnel honoured posthumously with prestigious UN honour- Dag Hammarskjold Medal 2019 for their courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.

They will be honoured on occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers (observed on 29 May) at the UN in New York. Jitender Kumar had made supreme sacrifice while serving in United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in Central African country of Congo.

About Dag Hammarskjold Medal 2019

  • It is awarded posthumously to members of peacekeeping operations who lost their lives during service with peacekeeping operations under operational control and authority of UN.
  • It was established in 1997 by UN Security Council (through resolution) on occasion of the 50th anniversary of peacekeeping.
  • It is named after second UN Secretary General and Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjold (In office: from 1953 to 1961).
  • Hammarskjold had died in a mysterious plane crash in 1961 while en route to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis.

Note: India is fourth largest contributor of personnel to UN peacekeeping. It currently contributes more than 6,400 military and police personnel to UN peace operations in Congo, Haiti, Abyei, Cyprus, West Asia, Lebanon, South Sudan and Western Sahara.
