Dia Mirza appointed as SDG Advocate

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed 17 global figures including Indian actress Dia Mirza and Alibaba chief Jack Ma as new advocates to drive action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Other influential public figures in this list includes Queen Mathilde of Belgium, British screenwriter Richard Curtis, Qatari Emir’s wife Sheikha Moza bint Nasser,  Nobel Laureate Nadia Murad, American economist Jeffrey Sachs and Forest Whitaker.

SDG Advocates

  • SDGs were adopted by the world leaders on September 25, 2015 as a part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Developments. UN member states aim to achieve by 2030.
  • The key role of SDG advocates is to raise awareness, inspire greater ambition, solidify global political will and push for faster action on SDGs. They represent universal character of SDGs, hailing from governments, entertainment, academia, sport, business and activist organizations around the world.
  • They are driven by key principles of SDGs, which include peace, prosperity, people, planet, and partnerships. They are tasked with raising awareness about the SDGs and build the momentum for transformative, inclusive development by 2030.
  • They also are tasked with driving action, building ambition, solidifying global political will and leveraging and building bridges between their audiences and work together to drive progress on achieving the SDGs.
