Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Kiren Rijiju gave Arjuna Awards 2018 to Smriti Mandhana and Rohan Bopanna for their outstanding achievements in the sports disciplines of cricket and tennis respectively. Smriti Mandhana is first Indian woman cricketer to score double- century (hundred) in one-day game. Rohan Bopanna is tennis players. He had won gold Medal in Men’s Doubles in Asian Games 2018. He is fourth Indian Player to win a Grand Slam (French Open) Title in Mixed Doubles
About Arujana Awards
- It is given annually by Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as part of National Sports Awards r to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
- Its objective is to recognize outstanding achievements of sportspersons in the field of sports at international level.
- It was established in 1961. It consists of Arujana statuette and a cash Award of Rs. 5 lakh. It is given to sportsperson only once in lifetime. It may be also given posthumously if such an occasion arises.
- Sports disciplines covered: Olympic Games/Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/World Cup/Word Championship disciplines and cricket or any equivalent recognized international Tournament, Indigenous Games, Sports for physically challenged.
