World Press Freedom Index

The World Press Freedom Index has been released by the organization Reporters Without Borders.



  • The report release this year has indicated that India has fallen to 150th position from last year's 142nd rank out of 180 countries.

  • The organization observed media polarisation is fuelling divisions within countries, as well as polarisation between countries at the international level.



  • Pluralism

  • Media independence

  • Media environment and self-censorship

  • Legislative framework

  • Transparency

  • Quality of infrastructure that support production of news and information.


India’s neighbours

  • The index has placed Pakistan at 157th position, Sri Lanka 146th, Bangladesh 162nd and Myanmar at 176th position.

  • Nepal has managed to climb up by 30 points in the global ranking at 76th position. Other neighbouring countries have witnessed fall.


Across the world

  • Norway (1st) Denmark (2nd), Sweden (3rd) Estonia (4th) and Finland (5th) occupy the top positions in the list.

  • North Korea is still at the bottom of the list at 180th position. Other authoritarian countries such as China (175th) and Russia (155th) have found place at the bottom half of the list.
