SDG India Index

NITI Aayog has released the SDG India Index 2020-21 to rank states based on their realisation of SDG goals.



  • Gender health, institutions, education, economic growth, climate change and environment are the indicators based on which SDGs evaluates progress of states and Union Territories (UTs).

  • The index was first time launched in 2018. It is the primary tool for gauging SDGs in India. The index has been successful in creating competition among states and UTs.

  • SDG scores range from 0-100. States with scores between 0-49 are called aspirants; 50-64 are performers, 65-99 as front-runner and 100 as achievers.

  • There are no states in the aspirants and achievers category. Majority of them find place in front-runner category.


Importance of SDG India Index

  • The index has been developed by NITI Aayog with support of United Nations. The index is important tool for tool for focused policy dialogue, formulation and implementation through development actions.

  • It identifies various gaps present in tracking SDGs and aims at improving the statistical system in India.


Observations made

  • The overall score of India has seen a leap by 6 points from 60 to 66. This is due to the improvement in providing facilities such as sanitation, clean water, clean and affordable energy etc.

  • Kerala was the topper of the list followed by Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The worst performing states were Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam.

  • States such as Haryana, Mizoram and Uttarakhand were the biggest gainers in improvement from their previous rankings.
