The theme of WIPD 2019 is “Reach for Gold: IP and Sports”. It seeks to highlight important of intellectual property rights in world of sports. It highlights importance of innovation, creativity and IP rights to support development of sport and its enjoyment around the world.
IP and Sports
In recent times, sports have become industry of its own, generating multi-billion dollars and millions of people are employed in it around the world. Sports businesses across the world use patents and designs for development of new technologies, materials, and equipment. Business relationships built on IPR help the multi-billion sports industry to secure economic value of sports.
The idea of observing World Intellectual Property Day was mooted in October 1999 by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). It was officially designated in 2000 by UNGA. The purpose of instituting this day was to address perceived gap between IPR as business/legal concept and its relevance to people’s lives. The date 26 April was chosen as on this date in 1970 Convention Establishing World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force.
