UNSC presidency

India will be taking over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August.



India was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a period of two years.



It will be the 10th tenure of India as UNSC president. The president of the council was with France for the month of July.



India will be organizing meetings that will focus on its core areas. They include counter terrorism, peace keeping and maritime security.


India’s role as president

It will be deciding the agenda for the particular month and also will be coordinating various meetings based on its agenda.


United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

  • UNSC is a part of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN). It is the only body to issue binding resolutions against member states.

  • The functions of UNSC includes approving any changes to the UN Charter, ensuring international peace and security and recommending new states to UN General Assembly.

  • The UNSC contains 15 members. 10 of the members are temporary ones elected for a period of two years based on regional quota. The remaining five are permanent members.

  • The five permanent members are USA, UK, Russia, China and France. These countries can veto any UNSC resolution.
