Partygate scandal

Issue

Prime Minister of UK, Boris Johnson has apologized in the House of Commons for attending a lockdown party last year.

Background

Prime Minister and many of his colleagues had attended a party during Christmas when the whole country was in lockdown and gatherings were banned.

Details

  • The gathering, known as ‘bring your own booze’ party, was held on the lawns of 10 Downing Street.

  • The issue recently came out into public domain and has been widely criticized for its insensitiveness.

  • This is not the only time Boris Johnson has violated lockdown rules. Investigations are taking place into occasions in 2020, including garden parties, Christmas get-togethers and office quiz nights at Downing Street.

Response of Johnson

  • The event was one of the most critical moments of his tenure and also his political career. He has been facing flak from both opposition party members and also his own.

  • Some of the members have even asked for his resignation. Johnson agreed that he had attended a party in Downing Street garden, which he thought was related to work.

  • Since the garden is part of his office, he believed it was related to work and had technically not broken any rules.

The garden party

  • An email invitation for the ‘socially distanced booze party’ was sent by the private secretary of Prime Minister Johnson.

  • Johnson, his wife and 40 members of the Prime Minister’s office attended the gathering. After reports emerged of the event, city police have been conducting investigations.

Restriction in the country during the events

  • Britain was under strict lockdown rules. Two people from different households were banned from meeting outside.

  • Schools, restaurants and pubs were closed across the country for over two months. Police fined thousands for flouting Covid restrictions.
