As demand for stricter gun control laws have grown, the largest gun lobby group, NRA, has opposed any changes to the law.

Recently, a shooter killed 19 children of an elementary school using easily available gun. This has started demands for gun control laws.

  • The National Rifle Association (NRA) is the biggest and most powerful gun lobby group in the US.

  • It has provided fierce opposition to all efforts to reduce or restrict access to lethal firearms.

  • The NRA had sued Texas State previously to force it to lower the legal age for owning a handgun from 21 years to 18.

  • The NRA was founded by William Conant Church and Captain George Wood Wingate in 1871, who were veterans of the Civil War.

  • The intention behind founding the group was to promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.

  • Initially, it was involved in promoting rifle clubs across the US, and encouraged marksmanship as a sport.

  • The NRA provides money for building and maintaining gun ranges. Its budget runs into millions of dollars.

Support for gun control

  • NRA supported the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, and then the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968.

  • It was against the implementation of a proposal for building a national firearms registry.

Political lobbying

  • NRA set up Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), which was founded in 1975. The Political Action Committee (PAC) was built in 1977.

  • The PAC funds lawmakers, with a very large budget to influence Congressmen and Congresswomen on gun policy in the US.

  • It has close ties with Republican Party and the lawmakers of the party are one of the strongest opponents of gun control law.
