  • The coalition is chaired jointly by Costa Rica and France. The UK acts as an Ocean co-chair. The HAC aims at protection both nature and people.

The countries in the coalition are mix of global south and north. It includes Asian, European, Latin American, African and North American.

Importance of protecting 30 percent area

  • Many evidence point to the need for protecting more than half of the natural areas to tackle biodiversity and climate crisis.

  • By adopting 30 percent criteria on global as well as regional scale, we can conserve biodiversity more efficiently.

Requirements for achieving 30 percent protections

  • To achieve the objective of 30 percent protection of planet, we need to treble the land protection and quadruple ocean safeguards from existing levels.

  • An international accord will be needed that will take steps in safeguarding 30 percent of the world’s lands and oceans.
