The government of India has signed a deal with France to join High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People.
The HAC is a collection of countries that have an aim of protecting 30 percent of the planet by the year 2030. It has more than 70 countries in the coalition.
The coalition is chaired jointly by Costa Rica and France. The UK acts as an Ocean co-chair. The HAC aims at protection both nature and people.
The 30 percent of Earth that is aimed at protection includes land and oceans. The protection of ecosystem and species is the key criteria of the HAC.
The countries in the coalition are mix of global south and north. It includes Asian, European, Latin American, African and North American.
Importance of protecting 30 percent area
Many evidence point to the need for protecting more than half of the natural areas to tackle biodiversity and climate crisis.
By adopting 30 percent criteria on global as well as regional scale, we can conserve biodiversity more efficiently.
Requirements for achieving 30 percent protections
To achieve the objective of 30 percent protection of planet, we need to treble the land protection and quadruple ocean safeguards from existing levels.
An international accord will be needed that will take steps in safeguarding 30 percent of the world’s lands and oceans.
