Elections in PoK

Issue

Elections for the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir assembly are scheduled to take place. The PoK has 53 assembly segments.

 

Background

The Pakistan Occupied Kashmir consists of Gilgit-Baltistan and some parts of Kashmir and Jammu region of the erstwhile state.

 

Details

  • Pakistan calls PoK as Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It came into existence after the 1949 ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India.

  • These parts were claimed by India during independence but were occupied by Pakistani forces during the first Indo-Pak war. It has remained in their control since then.

  • The constitution of Pakistan does not claim that PoK is its constituent. It is instead claimed to be the liberated part of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • The provinces of Punjab, Sind, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are the four provinces named in the constitution of the country.

  • The constitution however allows addition of new territories through secession or other method. It has special provisions for Jammu and Kashmir in case it wishes to be part of Pakistan.

 

The administration

  • The areas in PoK are centrally governed. The Pakistan military exercises final authority on all issues concerning these territories.

  • The PoK constitution has strict laws against individuals taking part in activities or ideology that prevents the region from joining Pakistan.

  • The Kashmir council governs the PoK region. It consists of 14 members out of which six are nominated by central government and eight members belong to PoK assembly.

  • The committee is headed by Prime Minister of Pakistan. PoK got its own constitution in 1974, the same year in which Pakistan got.
