Issue

The domestic spy agency of the UK, MI5 has alleged that a Chinese agent had infiltrated British Parliament and is working to destabilize the country.

Background

China has been accused of influencing domestic politics of countries by using its money power and influence.

Details

  • The alleged Chinese agent, Christine Ching Kui Lee, has been trying to improperly influence British MPs on behalf of the CCP.

  • The agency also accuses Lee of providing donations to politicians, with funding provided by foreign nationals in China and Hong Kong.

The MI5 report

  • The warning, known as Security Service Interference Alert (SSIA), alleges that Lee is acting in coordination with the United Front Work Department (UFWD) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

  • On behalf of China, Lee has transferred funds to existing politicians and aspiring parliamentarians by masking the origin of the money.

  • Such warnings are issued rarely by MI5 and issued only after talks between the spy agencies and parliamentary authorities.

Works of Lee

  • Lee is a solicitor and owner of Christine Lee & Co solicitors, a reputed firm in London. She has been helping Chinese-British cooperation.

  • For promoting engagement and understanding with the Chinese community in the UK, she set up British Chinese project.

  • The Chinese government has recognised her efforts for bringing dignity to overseas Chinese and she was even invited to attend 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

China’s stance

  • China has alleged that British government is undertaking a smearing campaign against the country.

  • In addition, it says that it does not want to interfere in other country’s internal affairs.

China’s espionage

  • China has been slowly penetrating British politics in recent years, which forced MI6 officials to say that the country was the single biggest priority for the agency.

  • In recent times, the role of UFWD has greatly expanded. China has stationed spies across the world including United States.

  • China has also intruded into telecommunications in Australia using Huawei Corporation to spy on people.
