Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated at his home by unidentified assailants. This event is sure to push the country more towards chaos.
The situation in Haiti was already grim but the death of an elected President will certainly negate the positive recovery.
Moise was sworn in as the President of Haiti in 2017. He was a businessman and was a political novice. He inherited a turmoil nation.
The President had vowed to strengthen government institutions, remove corruption and attract more investments and jobs in one of the poorest countries of Western hemisphere.
The problems started even before he started to work. The first election was annulled by court and a second one was necessitated. It was also won by Moise.
Moise was accused of being authoritative and unitary in working. He had dissolved the country’s parliament and was delaying elections.
He had told international groups about a plot to overthrow him and his government by several important persons including a judge and high-ranking police official.
Details of assassination
The details are yet to arrive but initial indication is that assassins were highly trained commandos or private mercenaries.
The assassins were hiding themselves as officials of US Drug Enforcement Agency. The president was shot and killed.
In absence of deputy President, the President of Supreme Court takes over. However, the position is currently vacant.
The President can be elected by the National Parliament, which is currently dissolved. Without the legislature, there will be no President.
