TRIFED and Big Basket deal

The TRIFED and e-grocery platform Big Basket entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the promotion and sale of tribal products on the platform.
Background
TRIFED was established in August 1987 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 1984 as a National level Cooperative body. It comes under Ministry of Tribal affairs.
Details
It will empower tribal people with knowledge, tools and information so that they can undertake their operations in a more systematic and scientific manner.
Aim
The objective of TRIFED is socio-economic development of tribal people in the country by way of marketing development of the tribal products.
Achieving objective

Capacity building of the tribal people through sensitization

Formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and imparting training to them for undertaking a particular activity

Exploring marketing possibilities in national as well as international markets

Creating opportunities for marketing tribal products on a sustainable basis and creating a brand
Actions under TRIFED

TRIFED is the nodal agency for implementing the MSP for Minor Forest Produce (MFP) Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY).

TRIFED has launched Village and Digital Connect Drive, Tech for Tribals, TRIFOD scheme etc.
Significance

TRIFED will help tribals get a wide market for selling their products, which otherwise is difficult to obtain.

The business environment for tribals will create employment generation and income sustenance for backward families.

TRIFED will provide a single platform for all tribal products cutting across regions and geography. This will allow a wider consumer base.

The platform is also expected to by-pass middle-men who would exploit conditions of tribals to get profits.
