Issue

The TRIFED and e-grocery platform Big Basket entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the promotion and sale of tribal products on the platform.

Background

TRIFED was established in August 1987 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 1984 as a National level Cooperative body. It comes under Ministry of Tribal affairs.

Details

It will empower tribal people with knowledge, tools and information so that they can undertake their operations in a more systematic and scientific manner.

Aim

The objective of TRIFED is socio-economic development of tribal people in the country by way of marketing development of the tribal products.

Achieving objective

  • Capacity building of the tribal people through sensitization

  • Formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and imparting training to them for undertaking a particular activity

  • Exploring marketing possibilities in national as well as international markets

  • Creating opportunities for marketing tribal products on a sustainable basis and creating a brand

Actions under TRIFED

  • TRIFED is the nodal agency for implementing the MSP for Minor Forest Produce (MFP) Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY).

  • TRIFED has launched Village and Digital Connect Drive, Tech for Tribals, TRIFOD scheme etc.

Significance

  • TRIFED will help tribals get a wide market for selling their products, which otherwise is difficult to obtain.

  • The business environment for tribals will create employment generation and income sustenance for backward families.

  • TRIFED will provide a single platform for all tribal products cutting across regions and geography. This will allow a wider consumer base.

  • The platform is also expected to by-pass middle-men who would exploit conditions of tribals to get profits.
