PM Gati Shakti National Master PlanDate: 19 October 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous
To boost multimodal connectivity and reduce logistics costs, the prime Minister has launched the “PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan”.
The main aim of the master plan is to enhance holistic planning and execution of infrastructure projects.
Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG-N) has built the portal for coordination.
The PM Gati Shakti consists of a digital platform that will connect 16 ministries such as Roads and Highways, Shipping, Telecom, Railways, Petroleum and Gas, Power, Shipping, and Aviation.
Geospatial data on existing infrastructure such as roads, highways, railways, and toll plazas will be offered by the portal.
In addition, geographic information about forests, rivers and district boundaries will be provided for easy clearances.
The progress of multi-sectoral and multi-regional projects can be easily tracked by various government departments in real time from a centralized place.
Every department will have visibility of each other’s activities for providing critical data while planning and execution of projects in a comprehensive manner.
Through this, different departments can prioritise their projects through cross–sectoral interactions and references.
Need for holistic planning
There are many instances of newly constructed road being dug by water departments to lay down pipes, causing wastage of money and efforts. The portal will prevent such instances.
State governments will be able to give commitment to investors regarding timeframes for the creation of infrastructure.
Logistics cost in India is about 13-14% of GDP as against about 7-8% of GDP in developed economies.
The platform will enable last-mile connectivity and bring down logistics costs with integrated planning and reducing implementation overlaps.
The Gati Shakti portal would help reduce the human intervention required for coordination between ministries.
Monitoring progress of key projects in real time will be done by project monitoring group under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
