Issue

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Panjab University have together created a pollen calendar for Chandigarh.

Background

The calendar was created after studying airborne pollen and its seasonal variations for about two years and will be the first for any city in India.

Details

The study has been titled ‘Pollen calendar to depict seasonal periodicities of airborne pollen species in a city situated in Indo-Gangetic plain, India’.

Pollen calendar

  • The time dynamics of airborne pollen present in a particular geographical area will be represented in pollen calendar.

  • Various airborne pollen present throughout the year will be accessible in a visual format as a single picture.

The concept

  • The concept is not new and has been implemented across the globe. However, this has not been implemented in Indian cities.

  • The designed pollen calendars are location specific and are closely related to locally distributed flora.

  • They have been used effectively in US and UK to prevent and diagnose allergic rhinitis/hay fever and predict the timing and severity of the pollen season.

Importance of studying pollen

  • Pollens are male biological structures of plants and are responsible for fertilization of plants. They are dangerous when inhaled by humans.

  • Pollens can strain the respiratory system and cause allergies. They can cause respiratory tract and nasobronchial allergy.

  • They are responsible for asthma, seasonal rhinitis, and bronchial irritation. In India, about 20-30 per cent of the population suffers from allergic rhinitis/hay fever.

Key findings

  • Variability of crucial pollen types in different seasons has been studied. It will also help in understanding of pollen seasons.

  • It will prevent exposure during high pollen load season by identifying the potential allergy triggers in people.

  • It will help in preparation of early advisories for citizens so that they can use protective gear during the period.
