The COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference will be hosted in Glasgow (UK) from October 31 to November 12.

 

Background

The conference is likely to bring together various parties to accelerate the climate action plan. It will strengthen resolve to handle threat of climate change.

 

Details

  • This edition will be the 26th Conference of Parties.  The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had recently published its assessment report on Earth’s climate.

  • The report warns of heat waves, droughts, extreme rainfall and sea-level rise in the coming decades due to climate change.

 

History

  • The Conference of Parties is held under the United Nations Climate Change Framework Convention (UNFCCC) that took place in 1994.

  • The COP meeting is held every year since 1995. The UNFCCC has 98 members including India, US and China.

  • The first COP was held in Berlin in 1995. The famous Kyoto Protocol was adopted during the COP3 held in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997.

  • Another important COP took place in 2015, in Paris, France. It was COP21 and aimed to work together to limit global warming to well below 2.

  • Cooperating in preparing roadmap for handling the impact of climate change

  •  Promoting education, training and public awareness regarding climate change
