Liquid nano urea

Date: 02 June 2022 Tags: Agriculture

Issue

India’s first liquid nano urea plant at Kalol in Gujarat was inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

Background

The product is patented and will not only substitute imported urea, but to also produce better results in farms.

Details

  • Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) produces liquid nano urea. It comes in a half-litre bottle priced at Rs 240.

  • Currently India is dependent on imports for its urea needs. The government is forced to foot the bill of subsidy.

  • This financial year, the government will pay a fertilizer subsidy bill of Rs 2 lakh crore, up by 25% from last fiscal year.

Working of liquid nano urea

  • The urea will be in form of nano particle. Urea is a nitrogen-based fertilizer, which artificially provides nitrogen nutrient required by plants.

  • Liquid nano urea is sprayed directly on the leaves and gets absorbed by the plant through the stomata, which are found on the epidermis of leaves.

Issues with conventional urea

  • Conventional urea has an efficiency of 25% whereas liquid nano urea has efficiency of as high as 85-90%.

  • They are not applied properly, resulting in vaporization of nitrogen. A significant amount of nitrogen is also washed away during irrigation.

Application

Around 2-4 ml of nano urea should be mixed a litre of water and sprayed on crop leaves at active growth stages.

Benefits

  • Liquid nano urea is not subsidized. Farmers will not have to carry a part of the burden of high price.

  • A bottle of liquid nano urea can effectively replace at least one bag of urea, which costs around Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,000 in international market.

  • Liquid nano urea will reduce indiscriminate use of conventional urea, increase crop productivity, and reduce soil, water, and air pollution.
