Sri Lankan army is going to conduct Exercise Western Shield, its biggest-ever military exercise in July 2019 with support of other service regiments of army and also Navy and Air Force troops. It will see largest representation of infantrymen contingent of the army.
Exercise Western Shield
- The exercise aims to make Sri Lankan army to be prepared to meet any future security threat. It will enhance troops' alertness for tactical operability, enemy offensives, and infantry operations.
- It will also enhance their knowledge of theoretical understanding, decision-making and operational abilities, command, map reading as well as psychological preparedness to face any threat.
- It will see participation of around 5,000 infantrymen, three General Officers Commanding, nine Brigade Commanders, 15 Commanding Officers and other supportive Army personnel are expected to take part.
- It will be conducted on vast region ranging from Mannar to Puttalam, including Kalpitiya, Wilpattu National Park, Mavillu and Thabbowa Forest Reserves and Western coastal belt. It will provide opportunity for Army trainees to march through those areas which are not usually accessible
