Mohana Singh: 1st woman IAF pilot operational on Hawk advanced jet aircraft

Flight Lt Mohana Singh has become the first woman fighter pilot of Indian Air Force (IAF) to fly by day on Hawk advanced jet aircraft. She achieved this feat after after gruelling 4 Aircraft combat sortie and landed at Air Force station, Kalaikunda , West Bengal, which was the last syllabus sortie, of being fully operational on the Hawk Jets. She was one of three women pilots inducted in the fighter stream of the IAF in 2016.

About Mohana Singh

Her intense induction training involved flying both air-to-ground and air-to-air combat missions. She had undertaken many practice missions which involved firing of guns, rockets and dropping high calibre bombs. She also had participated in various Air Force level flying exercises. She has over total 500 hours of incident-free flying of which 380 hours are on the Hawk Mk 132 jet.

Note: Flight Lt Mohana Singh is among three women officers along with Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvadi who were first batch of women pilots to join fighter stream of IAF in June 2016. Earlier in May 2019, Flight Lt Bhawana Kanth also had created history by becoming the first daytime woman fighter pilot to fly MiG-21 Bison.
