 Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has received application from Zydus Cadilla for getting approval for its ZyCov-D Covid-19 vaccine.



The CDSCO will have to study the trials and results of the vaccine before granting Emergency Use Approval (EUA).



  • If the vaccine gets approval from the regulator, it will become the world’s first DNA vaccine that will be used to protect against SARS Cov-2 virus.

  • The vaccine will be based on plasmid DNA technology. Plasmids are non-replicating version of a DNA molecule, which are genetically engineered.

  • The vaccine will contain the code in form of DNA, which will act towards creating spike proteins of the SARS CoV-2 virus.

  • The code will instruct cells to produce outer spike proteins. This will make immune system develop anti-bodies in response to the spike protein.

  • Most of the currently available vaccines are given in two shots. Some vaccines have single shots too. The ZyCov-D will be given in three shots.

  • An interval of 28 days will be followed between first-second and second-third shots given to individuals.

  • The most unique feature of the vaccine is that no needle syringes will be used to deliver the drug into the body.

  • Instead, the shot will be through a precise stream of fluid that can penetrate the skin and which will be delivered using a spring-powered device.


Safety and effectiveness

  • The vaccine is said to have reduced symptomatic conditions of individuals by 67 percent in comparison to those without vaccine.

  • Two shots are said to be enough to prevent severe Covid-19 symptoms from appearing in body. The third shot will keep moderate symptoms away.

  • The vaccine is said to protect even against the concerning Delta variant strain. It can be altered to provide protection against new strains.



There have been several concerns associated with DNA vaccines as they can integrate with the DNA of cells and cause auto-immune disease.
