Zika cases in Kerala

Kerala has detected about 15 cases of the Zika virus. The patients are being treated and are currently stable.



  • Zika infection is spread by mosquitoes, which are carriers of the virus. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is responsible for spreading the infection. The same mosquito also spreads chikungunya and dengue.

  • The infection was first detected in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys. Human transmission was seen five years later. It can also be transmitted sexually.

  • The infection was sporadically reported but the biggest outbreak took place in Yap islands of Pacific. Brazil reported a big outbreak in 2015.

  • The most striking feature of effects of the infection is microcephaly. It is a condition in which babies of infected mothers are born with small head and underdeveloped brain.


Dangers of Zika

  • The virus is not dangerous to life. It is only threatening to pregnant women due to the microcephaly condition.

  • The associated conditions include Guillain-Barré syndrome, which was reported in large numbers in affected countries.



  • There are no unique symptoms in infected individuals. They usually show flu symptoms such as fever, headache, body ache etc.

  • Other additional symptoms include body rash and sometimes conjunctivitis. The symptoms manifest in abut 3-14 days after the bite.



  • There are no prescribed drugs for Zika virus. Patients need rest and consumption of fluid to keep their body parameters normal.

  • Measures such as chemical fuming, preventing accumulation of waste water and using mosquito repellants can prevent infection.
