Legendary singer and musician Bappi Lahiri passed away recently due to Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA is said to be the most common form of sleep related breathing disorder.

  • It causes one to repeatedly stop and start breathing while asleep. The individual is forced to wake up multiple times during sleep as a result of breathlessness.

  • OSA usually takes place when throat muscles intermittently relax and block airway during sleep.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): It is the most frequent form wherein throat muscles tend to relax.

  • Central Sleep Apnea: In this form, the brain signals to the muscles that control breathing to become irregular.

  • Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome: In this form of complex situation, the person is affected with both obstructive as well as central sleep apnea.

  • The most common sign of OSA is snoring, gasping for breath, dry mouth, sore throat, gasping or frequent episodes of breathlessness during sleep.

  • Other symptoms are getting forgetful, tired, irritation, night sweats, nighttime frequent urination, frequent headaches, sexual dysfunction, and mood swings.

  • OSA can take place multiple times at night, resulting in lack of adequate oxygen supply to the tissues. The brain receives the signal and wakes up the individual.

  • Lack of diagnosis can cause hypothyroidism, cognitive impairment, depression, dementia, diabetes, high blood pressure.
