A long duration hot test on liquid propellant Vikas engine was conducted by Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO).

The Vikas engine is central to future space plans of India. The engine will be used in launching the first manned space mission of India, Gaganyaan.

  • The GSLV MkIII vehicle will be used to ferry Gaganyaan. The test was conducted for the core L110 liquid stage of Vikas engine.

  • It was taken up in ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) of Tamil Nadu. The engine managed to stay fired for about 240 seconds of the test.

  • The working of the engine was in line with conceptual parameters. It managed to reach the qualification mark required for Gaganyaan mission.

Vikas engine

  • The Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre of ISRO has developed Vikas engine for spacecrafts. The design was borrowed from Viking engine.

  • The engine is used in both PSLV and GSLV rockets that are needed for carrying out space mission of the agency.

  • Nitrogen tetroxide is the oxidizer used in the engine whereas Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is the fuel that is used.
