Date: 21 June 2019 Tags: Miscellaneous

India’s first solar-powered cruise boat will be launched in Alappuzha, Kerala by State Water Transport Department (SWTD) in December 2019. The initiative comes close on heels of SWTD’s earlier launch of country’s first solar-powered ferry Aditya in 2016, which is in operation on Vaikom-Thavanakadavu route.

Features of cruise boat

  • It is double-deck, double-engine catamaran-type vessel that can carry 100 passengers.
  • It is hybrid vessel powered by motor that can source energy from solar panels, battery, as well as generator.
  • Its battery has capacity of 80 KWh (kilowatt hour) power backup, as compared to 50 KWh backup in Aditya.
  • It adheres to norms specified by Indian Registry of Shipping (IRS). It has air-conditioned lower deck and pushback seats.
  • Its upper deck is non-air conditioned and can be used for dining and to get better view of the backwaters.
  • It does not create air and noise pollution and will help in huge savings in energy expenses. Apart from regular cruise, it can also host parties and conferences.
