H10N3 flu detected in human

A person in China’s Jiangsu has been confirmed as the first victim of a human infection with the H10N3 strain of bird flu.



There are varieties of bird flu and majority of them circulate among avian population. It is first instance of such infection in humans.



  • The details of serology showed that the strain of virus was indeed H10N3. The risk from infection is very low and does not spread fast among humans.

  • The H10N3 strain of virus is very rare among birds. There is very less information pertaining to its occurrence. The severity of infection is also low.

  • The authorities have said that the source of infection was not known and other infected cases of the virus were not found.

  • Avian influenza virus having low impact on birds can be fatal for humans. However, there was very low evidence of people to people infection.



  • Cases of infection from avian influenza virus are very common in China where there are large species of wild and farmed birds.

  • Countries such as Russia have also witnessed human transmission of avian virus like H5N8 that had previously affected poultry farm across Europe.

  • Experts say that chances of infection to humans are quite possible in future as the virus continuously circulates among avian species.


 Future studies

  • The genetic sequence of the H10N3 virus is not yet known. The sequence will help in conducting future studies and knowing the threat to humans.

  • The virus would need some more mutations if it has gain the ability to spread from person to person in future.
