An IndiGo trial flight made a successful landing in Rajasthan’s Kishangarh Airport using the indigenous navigation system GAGAN. 



  • GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) is a regional satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS).

  • It is collaboration between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

  • Apart from GAGAN, the US (WAAS), Europe (EGNOS) and Japan (MSAS) have similar navigation technology.

  • The service is based on the availability of GPS and GAGAN Geo Stationary Satellites (GSAT-8, GSAT-10 and GSAT-15), launched by ISRO. 



The objective is to provide a navigation system to assist aircraft in accurate landing over the Indian airspace and in the adjoining area.



GAGAN is the first Satellite-Based Augmentation System in the world which has been certified for approach with vertical guidance operating in Indo-pacific region.



  • The system provides accuracy, availability, and integrity essential for each phase of flight, en route the approach for airports.

  • Airline operation become more efficient and effective, increase air safety, and fuel efficiency. 



  • It will save a significant amount due to withdrawal of ground aids and reduced workload of airline crew and traffic controllers.

  • Apart from aviation, it can benefit sectors such as transportation, railways, surveying, maritime, highways, telecom industry, and security agencies.
