Punjab farmers burning wheat stubble

Date: 04 May 2022 Tags: Miscellaneous

Despite high demand for wheat fodder, farmer have been burning their wheat stubble in parts of Punjab.

High nutritional cattle feed called tudi is produced using wheat stubble. The wheat production is very low this year and farmers could earn huge profit by selling it.

  • Usually tudi rates remain high before farmers start harvesting wheat. As the wheat fodder enters market, the rate declines.

  • This year the rates have been comparatively higher. It is still being sold at the rate of Rs 400 to Rs 800 per quintal.

Reasons for high rate

  • The wheat production this year has been less. The early onset of summer has played a role in its decline. The nutritional value of wheat produced has also declined.

  • Farmers are getting 15% to 20% less production of tudi and wheat stalks availability is also very low. This led to the high rates even during the season.

Tudi production

  • Punjab produces around 20 million tonnes in normal cropping season, but this time it would be around 14 million tonnes only, which could be worth Rs 14,000 crores.

  • Farmers can make around Rs 13,500 to Rs 14,500 per acre after paying to the fodder maker. This has further chances of growth due to high demand.

Burning of stubble

  • Farmers are burning the top parts of root that remains even after making tudi. This can be avoided.

  • Soil friendly insects, organic matter, and considerable loss of nitrogen, DAP, Potassium can be caused due to burning of stubble.

  • Wheat stubble burning is not a major issue as it is usually used for making fodder. Rice stubble is burned due to low nutritional value and is the major cause of pollution.
