Issue

The commercial construction on Mumbai’s sprawling salt lands has been opposed by the leaders of ruling alliance of Maharashtra.

Background

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had granted permission for construction on several salt lands.

Details

  • According to available data, only about 150 acres is suitable for construction as per a preliminary study.

  • The municipal authorities consider these lands as a solution to Mumbai’s housing problems as land has become a priced commodity.

Development of salt pans

  • Developing the salt pans in Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region was decided in 2004. MMRDA would be the implementing agency for development of salt pan lands in the city.

  • A master plan of Salt Pan Lands was initiated in 2015. A high power committee under the Chairmanship of the state Chief Secretary would supervise the process.

  • The MMRDA is looking for consultants on developing affordable housing projects on these lands, the bidding for which was opened recently.

Reasons for opposition

  • The Housing minister opposed the construction saying that opening the lands for construction would affect the delicate natural balance of ecology.

  • The salt pans act as natural groundwater rechargers. The threat of global warming could further enhance if natural ecology of Mumbai is affected.

  • Environment minister Aditya Thackrey also said that no such projects will be allowed to come up in the city as there are enough alternative lands available for construction.
