Sher-i-Kashmir medals

Issue

The Sher-i-Kashmir medals have been modified by the government of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Background

The medals are awarded to J&K Police for gallantry and meritorious service.

 

Details

  • The new changes include removing image of former Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah and the emblem of the erstwhile state of J&K.

  • The new medals will carry the national emblem of India and the words “Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry” or “Jammu and Kashmir Medal for Meritorious Service”.

  • The words “Sher-i-Kashmir” were replaced with “Jammu and Kashmir” on these medals in 2020 after abrogation of Article 370.

 

The Sher-i-Kashmir medals

  • The medals were instituted in 2001 by the National Conference government. It is made up of 3 tola pure gold.

  • The medal had image of Sheik Abdulla, known as Sher-i-Kashmir (Lion of Kashmir), on one side, and the emblem of the Jammu and Kashmir state on the other.

 

Conferring award

  • The medals were awarded to officers/ officials serving in Jammu and Kashmir for their exemplary bravery in the line of duty or distinguished service.

  • They were announced on the eve of every Independence Day and Republic Day similar to the one given by Government of India.

 

Associated prize

  • The recipient of Gallantry award received an additional Rs 1,000 per month as award money in his/her salary, while the recipients of the meritorious service received a one-time award of Rs 5,000.

  • There was no ceiling on Sher-i-Kashmir Police Medals for Gallantry, but Medals for Meritorious Service was fixed at six.

 

Significance of medals

  • The medals were instituted by the government to encourage J&K police personnel fighting Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. 

  • The state government used its special status under Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave it power to have its own Constitution, Flag and Emblem.
