Sacrilege incidents

Date: 28 June 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

The alleged sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib incident has been turning out to be a big problem for the Punjab government.

The incident took place in 2015 when SAD-BJP was in power. Opposition parties are questioning inability of the government to punish the perpetrators.

  • The High Court of Haryana and Punjab dismissed the petition filed by the Special Investigation Team that was investigating the case.

  • Detractors of the Chief Minister have been portraying this incident as the defeat of the government and putting pressure for the Chief Minister to resign.

Cases of sacrilege

  • The first incident took place in 2015 when a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib was stolen from an unattended Gurudwara in Faridkot district.

  • The incident was shocking because stealing a holy scripture had not taken place anytime earlier and there was a chance it would escalate.

  • The second incident took place when abusive posters of Sikh preachers were posted on Gurudwara walls. It had threatened to throw the Guru Granth Sahib on the streets if the movie “Messenger of God” was not allowed to be released.

  • The third incident involved scattered pieces of Guru Grant Sahib across the same village. The people allege that government was unable to catch the culprit.

  • The current chief minister had promised to capture and punish the culprits. The police firing that followed protests were also promised to investigate.

  • The government is running against time to finish the investigation and identify the accused before the model code of conduct comes into action in early 2022.
