The Indian National League party of Kerala has seen a split. The INL is a minor partner of ruling LDF government.

The party is getting power for the first time in its history. The two factions are led by the General Secretary and the state president.

  • Ebrahim Sulaiman Sait founded the Indian National Leaguge (INL) in Delhi in 1994 as a breakaway faction of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

  • Sait was upset at the party’s stand to support the Congress government in Kerala even after it failed to prevent demolition of Babri Masjid.

  • IML was said to offer Muslims in Kerala an alternative option to IUML. It was said to protect Muslim rights.

  • The aim was to turn as the principal party among Muslim voters in the northern Muslim-dominated districts of Kerala.

The growth

  • The party knew that for tasting success it had to go with bigger parties. Congress and BJP were unacceptable to the party but left party leaders were against coalition with INL.

  • It has unofficial understanding with CPM in several seats and also in local body elections. They however did not officially join the government.

The feud

  • The two factions were at loggerheads over some of the decisions. The followers of both factions clashed violently on streets.

  • One faction alleges that another faction was taking decision without consulting others. There are also corruption allegations for several posts.

  • The LDF has refused to allow two factions to exist simultaneously until the feud is resolved. There is also a chance of power show to claim the recognition of Election Commission.
