Government issues guidelines to set up EV charging stations

Union Government has issued guidelines to facilitate availability of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure. In this regard Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has amended Model Building Byelaws (MBBL), 2016 and Urban Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation (URDPFI) Guidelines, 2014 to make provisions for establishing EV Charging Infrastructure. Besides, Union Ministry of Power also has issued guidelines and standards for charging infrastructure for EVs, which have also been considered while making these amendments.

New Guidelines

  • For long range and heavy-duty electric vehicles, there should be at least one charging station on each side of highway every 100 kilometers.
  • Public charging station should also be there on both sides of the highways or roads on every 25 km.
  • Government also has advocated for charging points in residential areas.

Significance of new Guidelines

  • They have been circulated to all State Governments and UT Administrations with request to amend their Building Byelaws and Master Plan Regulations.
  • They will act as guiding document State Governments and Union Territories to incorporate norms and standards of EV Charging Infrastructure in their respective Building Bye Laws.


  • Cities and towns across the country are grappling with problems of environmental pollution thereby severely impacting health of urban residents.
  • India is also committed to Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG-13): Climate Change of UN to take urgent action to combat climate change.
  • Government has initiated several steps to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce pollution in cities across the country.
  • One of such steps is encouraging EVs, which are environment friendly mode of transportation. Government has desired that 25% of total vehicles on roads should be EVs by 2030.
